Car parts store to open two new locations

Dayton Business Journal - by Tom Demeropolis DBJ Staff Reporter

National car parts retailer O’Reilly Automotive Inc. wants to capitalize on people taking better care of their cars themselves.

The Springfield, Mo.-based company is expanding its reach deeper into the Dayton market, adding two locations before March.

The Dayton area already is home to four O’Reilly locations. The company entered the market after O’Reilly completed its 650,000-square-foot distribution center in Indianapolis in 2005.

The two new stores will be on Smithville Road in Kettering and Springboro Pike in Miami Township.

Ed Randall, director of property management for O’Reilly, said the stores are part of 150 new openings nationwide.

The Kettering location, which the company will own, will be 8,800 square feet and open in late February. The Miami Township location, which is a ground-lease, will be 7,000 square feet and open during the second week of February.

The cost of the two buildings was not disclosed, but a permit filed with the city of Kettering shows that building will cost $650,000.

Randall declined to name the construction companies that are building the two locations.

Both stores will employ between seven and 10 full-time employees and several part-timers.

David Turney, spokesperson for O’Reilly, said Dayton’s proximity to Indianapolis and its population size make it a good fit for O’Reilly’s expansion.

“We look at the level of competition and we think there is enough to support multiple stores,” he said.

Unlike its competitors, such as Advance Auto Parts and AutoZone, Turney said O’Reilly hires mostly full-time employees with mechanical experience.

Danielle Kuehnle, sales and leasing agent with Oberer Realty Services Ltd., represented the owner, Schumaker LP, in the ground lease of the Miami Township location. She said both the owner and O’Reilly were happy to get the deal done, especially in these tough economic times.

Kuehnle also said the location, across from a Meijer store and near a Kroger store, will see plenty of traffic.

“The visibility there is good for them,” she said. “It has good access and good demographics for their industry.”

Randall expects more O’Reilly locations in the Dayton area, but he isn’t sure how many at this time.
